1. Chennai Metro Overview

The Tamil Nadu capital city is served by the Chennai Metro fast metro transit system. The Chennai Metro system, which opened in 2015, is the fourth-longest metro network in India. There were three lines under development and two operating on the Chennai Metro as of March 2022. The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation is in charge of building and running the Chennai Metro (CMRL).

The Government of Tamil Nadu and the Union Government of India jointly own the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation. There are both elevated and subterranean metro stations in the Chennai Metro system. To guarantee smooth communication and interoperability, Chennai Metro Rail Corporation intends to assume control of the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System. The Indian Railways runs this network of elevated trains.

Chennai Metro Routes

There are two main categories into which Chennai Metro lines may be placed.

The Green Line and Blue Line are active lines.

Orange, Red, and Purple lines are under development.

3. Chennai Metro: Operational Lines

Chennai Metro: Blue Line 1- Wimco Nagar Depot to Chennai International Airport

One of the two metro lines in use in the Chennai Metro network is called Blue Line 1. From Wimco Nagar to Chennai’s International Airport, the Chennai Metro’s Blue Line 1 runs. Along the route, Line 1 has a total of 26 metro stops. Thirteen of the 26 metro stations are elevated, and the remaining 13 are subterranean.

Chennai Metro: Green Line 2 – Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount

4. Chennai Metro: Under Construction Lines

The Purple Line, Orange Line, and Red Line are the three Chennai Metro lines that are currently under development.

Chennai Metro: Purple Line 3 Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT 2

Chennai Metro’s Purple Line, 3 is a metro line that is currently being built. This will travel to the Madhavaram Milk Colony from Siruseri SIPCOT 2. 5. Chennai Metro: Orange Line 4 – Poonamallee Bypass to Lighthouse

One of the three Chennai Metro lines that is still under development is Orange Line 4. The orange line would eventually stretch from the Poonamallee Bypass to the Lighthouse region. There will be 28 stops along the orange line. Ten stations would be subterranean, while the remaining eighteen would be raised.

The Orange Line extension will be more than 26 km long overall. The following stations are on Chennai Metro’s Line 4 route.

6. Chennai Metro: Red Line 5 – Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur

Red Line 5 of the Chennai Metro is currently under development and will link the Sholinganallur and Madhavaram areas. There will be 48 metro stations along this important metro route. Of the total number of stations, six will be subterranean, one at-grade, and 41 elevated.

7. Chennai Metro: Fares

The fares on the Chennai metro system have been kept affordable, as it was established to assist the general public. The Chennai metro has a minimum fee of Rs. 10 and a maximum charge of Rs. 50. The passenger’s journey distance determines the fee.

8. Chennai Metro Timings

The Chennai metro has made a substantial contribution to everyday commuter travel time reduction. Chennai Metro is now open from 4:30 AM to 11:00 PM. One train departs every 4-5 minutes during rush hour and every 15 minutes during off-peak hours.

9. Upcoming Chennai Metro Routes

  • By 2025, Kodambakkam to Poonamallee will be operational.
  • By December 2024, the 16-kilometer stretch between Kodambakkam and Poonamallee will be finished.
  • Commuters may cover the route in less than 60 minutes when it is finished.
  • Thirteen of the eighteen stations on the route are now undergoing rapid construction.
  • The line runs along a longer 26.1 km stretch that connects Lighthouse and Poonamallee Bypass. Before December 2025, it could be the first to open to the public.
  • Entry and departure points are being built at Valasaravakkam, Alapakkam, Saligramam, Kattupakkam, Thelliagaram, and Poonamallee.
  • There are four stops along the double-decker section of the route, and work has been delayed because a high-voltage subterranean electrical wire is blocking the path of the pillars that are being installed.
  • St. Thomas Mount-Adambakkam Phase 2: Completion by 2027
  • Phase 2 Corridor Five’s St. Thomas Mount-Adambakkam length is expected to be completed by 2027, according to a statement from Chennai Metro Rail Limited. This 4-kilometer segment is one of the most important ones. This section will benefit a large number of Chennai residents.
