Introduction On Ahmedabad Metro

Ahmedabad Metro is a fast transport system serving Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, India.

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited was founded in February 2010, and the project’s 40.03 km (24.87 mi) Phase-1 was authorized in October 2013 with two lines, North-South and East-West. The construction began on March 14, 2015. On March 4, 2019, a 6.5 km (4.0 mi) segment of the East-West corridor was inaugurated and opened to the public on March 6, 2019. Except for the Thaltej Gam end and three stations, the rest of Phase-1 was inaugurated on September 30, 2022, and opened to the public between October 2 and 6, 2022.

The building of the 28.26 km (17.56 mi) long Phase-2 between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar began in January 2021. The branch line to GIFT City is scheduled to open in early 2024.

History

The Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board conducted a study on urban mobility between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad in 2003. It also completed the comprehensive project study with the help of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and RITES, which it presented in June 2005 and got permission from the Central Government the same year. Following an estimated cost of 4,295 crore (US$540 million) and a feasibility assessment, the project was canceled in 2005 to make room for the Ahmedabad BRTS and suburban railway projects. The project was revived in 2008, taking into account future developments in and around Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, and additional corridors were built to make the project feasible.

The Government of Gujarat formed the special purpose vehicle firm, Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad firm Ltd, later renamed Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) in 2018, on 4 February 2010 with 202 crore (US$25 million). Later that year, the Central Government opted to control 50% of the corporation.
